Maclean Fire Suppression

Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program

Helper, UT

The former Maclean coal mine was a large mining operation located in the historic mining district approximately four miles west of Helper, Utah. The abandoned coal mine is known to have been on fire since the 1940’s. Opal Group, L.L.C. was contracted by the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining to define the fire front and inject FEM-12, a new fire extinguishing agent into the burning coal. The fire front is being defined using a Global Positioning System (GPS) survey of the surficial expression of the burning fire (cracks, fissures, steam, burnt vegetation), infra-red aerial surveying and exploration drilling with thermocouple installation. Following definition of the appropriate injection sites, the FEM-12 will be injected under pressure for fire suppression and extinguishing.
